About:

21st Century C.A.R.E. is a not-for-profit charitable foundation dedicated to cancer patients. The foundation was originally established in 1996 by Dr. Charles Thomas in Asheville, NC when a grateful patient bequeathed a generous sum for the purpose of providing cancer education in the community.   In January 2007, a new Board of Directors was elected and the headquarters was moved to Fort Myers, Florida. The new Board has ambitious plans to further the 21st Century C.A.R.E. mission of providing cancer patient assistance, education programs including cancer screening, support groups, and contributing to vital cancer research.

Financial Assistance For Cancer Patients

21st Century C.A.R.E. provides patients immediate financial assistance for incidental expenses related to active cancer treatments.   This allows the patient to put their focus where it belongs – on beating the disease.

The eligible patient must be referred by a physician to be considered for assistance.  Applications are processed without delay. Once the application is approved, we can then offer patients financial assistance for incidental expenses related to: transportation to and from treatments, follow-up visits related to cancer-care, childcare during treatment, temporary housing due to geographical distance from the treatment center, medical supplies and much more.

Cancer Research

We are proud to play a role and have pooled resources with prestigious institutions like Harvard Medical School on vital cancer research. 21st Century C.A.R.E is also cooperating with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, a research organization funded by the National Cancer Institute in the search for a cure. Working with a variety of groups allows more research to be done in all categories of oncology including: medical oncology, surgical oncology, pediatric oncology, gynecological oncology and radiation oncology.

Cancer Education

Cancer education is crucial to the prevention of cancer. That is why we reach out to the community to educate. We actively participate in Community Health Fairs and provide free screenings for breast, prostate, skin, and other cancers. We can even provide noted physicians for speaking engagements and lecture series.

In addition to educating the community we provide emotional support groups for those affected by cancer. Our meetings are led by a Master’s level counselor with more than ten years experience in facilitating cancer support groups. By learning you are not alone in dealing with cancer, you can become empowered, get insight on how to manage the disease and ultimately take control over it.
